The Challenge

Stacey Ferguson, Mon Health Center for Outpatient Surgery, was hired as the administrator before the surgery centers opened their doors. The outpatient surgery center began construction in 2015 and commenced its first surgeries by 2017. A crucial decision point for the center was setting up their operational systems well before the first surgery to prevent any slowdowns once operations commenced. Due to previous experience, Stacey was aware of the shortcomings disparate systems will bring. She knew that she wanted to open her doors with software that was integrated from start to finish to avoid redundant work, manual data entry, and overall inefficiencies.

The Solution

To address these challenges, the Mon Health Center for Outpatient Surgery made an early decision to implement the HST’s surgery center management. They started setting up the system six months prior to opening, which included entering inventory and setting up scheduling. This proactive approach enabled a seamless start to their operations. Furthermore, Stacy emphasized the importance of having a fully integrated system where their electronic charts and practice management system communicated seamlessly. This integration was pivotal, especially for inventory management, ensuring efficiency and accuracy were maintained as the facility grew busier.

Our physicians don’t like using the bigger systems, like Cerner, Epic, and Meditech. Those are very complex systems. HST is very streamlined for ASCs, and they don’t need all the complicated stuff that just gets in the way.

The Results

The results of implementing a well-integrated system were significant. The center achieved 100% compliance with its documentation practices, with all physicians and anesthesiologists adopting the digital charts over paper-based methods. The system’s user-friendliness and compliance led to streamlined processes that greatly improved both physician and patient experiences. Moreover, the center was able to handle cases more efficiently, with Stacey being able to monitor surgeries in real-time through HST’s surgery center management – a capability she did not have with other systems. The facility also benefited from cost savings and enhanced service delivery, which in turn helped increase patient volume and satisfaction. Additionally, the support from HST was exceptional, providing help even outside of regular business hours, which further added to the facility’s operational success.

We chose to use HST prior to even completing construction. Starting early, about six months ahead of time, was one of the best decisions we made. We were able to build out our inventory, scheduling blocks, and things like that to make the system run seamlessly. We had our system entirely built before doing our first surgery.
