Introduction

As an ASC development, management, and billing company, MedBridge Development helps the centers it supports strengthen both the business and operational sides of care delivery. That means helping teams manage revenue cycle workflows, clinical documentation, provider collaboration, compliance expectations, and the everyday systems that keep surgery centers moving.

HST has been part of MedBridge’s foundation for much of the organization’s history. According to Mackenzie Ellis, Director of Client Services at MedBridge Development, the relationship began heavily on the revenue cycle side, supporting billing, coding, and collections. Over time, MedBridge has expanded that foundation into the clinical and operational workflows that help its centers improve visibility, reduce friction, and create a more consistent ASC operating model.

Challenge

For many centers, the challenge started with paper. Paper charts created storage needs, filing requirements, record retention costs, and stacks of documentation that had to be maintained for each patient. More importantly, paper limited visibility into what was happening inside each case, making it harder for leaders to use documentation and workflow data to support oversight, reporting, and improvement.

MedBridge also supported centers transitioning out of larger health system environments, where staff had access to broad enterprise EMRs that contained far more than the ASC needed for a surgical episode. Instead of staying focused on the records and workflows specific to surgery center care, teams could find themselves searching through a patient’s larger medical history to locate relevant clinical records. For MedBridge, the goal was to help staff and providers stay focused on the specific needs of the ASC while building more consistent workflows across a diverse portfolio of centers.

The Solution

MedBridge’s use of HST began with a strong revenue cycle foundation. HST was already closely connected to MedBridge’s financial and operational systems, supporting billing, coding, and collections across the organization’s ASC portfolio. As MedBridge looked to strengthen operational workflows, HST eChart became a key part of extending that same connected approach into clinical documentation and center-level visibility.

One of the capabilities that stood out was the ability to customize workflows for staff while still keeping core compliance elements required. Mackenzie pointed to alerts and flags, such as reminders when consent has not been signed before a patient is rolled back to the OR, as an example of how HST eChart balances flexibility with structure. That matters in ASC environments where each center may work a little differently, but compliance and documentation requirements still need consistency.

MedBridge has also continued exploring additional HST capabilities that support more connected operations. Mackenzie highlighted the Nexmatic interface with patient and anesthesia monitors, which helps reduce nursing data entry and make reporting more accessible for anesthesia billing companies and physician offices. She also mentioned Patient Engagement, Clarity, HST Home, Document Hub, and single sign-on as areas MedBridge is piloting, preparing for, or looking forward to as it continues expanding its use of HST.

You can’t really start without the data, so that’s been huge for us.

The Results

For MedBridge, the biggest impact comes back to data. With HST eChart, the organization can bring EHR data into the same reporting environment as financial and revenue cycle data. That gives leaders a clearer view of what is happening at the center level, even when they are not physically on-site, and creates a stronger foundation for informed operational decisions.

That visibility has become more valuable as MedBridge has expanded eChart adoption. Mackenzie shared that only about 30% of MedBridge clients were using eChart a couple of years ago, compared with about 70% today. As more centers move onto the platform, MedBridge can better understand center-level activity, identify opportunities for improvement, and support leaders with the data they need to guide policy decisions.

The impact also shows up in practical operational conversations. Mackenzie pointed to provider block utilization as one example, noting that reporting helps the team reassess policies, work through accountability questions, and have more informed conversations with leadership. Staff have also responded positively once they begin using the system, especially when workflows can happen in one viewpoint instead of requiring teams to open multiple windows or search through a larger, more complex system.

Jessica Rodriguez
The balance between customizable features and having a consistent visual workflow is something that a lot of our ASC staff members have appreciated.

The Future

Looking ahead, MedBridge sees HST as part of its strategy for standardization and scale. Mackenzie noted that while HST Practice Management is used across its centers, broader EHR adoption is especially important because every ASC operates differently. Centers may vary by specialty, size, number of ORs, provider mix, and culture, but having a shared technology foundation can help MedBridge standardize essential compliance, policy, and operational workflows where consistency matters most.

MedBridge is also focused on making better use of the technology already available to its teams. Mackenzie described one of the organization’s 2026 goals as increasing adoption of tools that are already at their fingertips but not yet fully leveraged. With continued focus on HST eChart, Patient Engagement, Clarity, HSTPay, HST Home, Document Hub, and single sign-on, MedBridge is working toward a more integrated operating model that helps centers work smarter, streamline workflows, and scale more efficiently as the organization grows.
