The Challenge
Todd Currier, the administrator at Bend Surgery Center, discussed the challenges his facility faced prior to adopting HST’s software solutions. Bend Surgery Center, established in 1997 and growing significantly over the years, had been managing its operations with outdated, extensive paper-based processes. The center, being multi-specialty with eight operating rooms and a large group of surgeon-owners, was burdened by the inefficiencies and limitations of paper charting. As the center prepared for a major expansion, doubling its size, management realized the critical need to streamline operations to handle the increasing volume of work more effectively.
The Solution
In response to these challenges, Bend Surgery Center transitioned to HST’s electronic charting as their EMR solution. This decision was driven by several factors including positive past experiences with HST’s billing and inventory solution and notably, HST’s exceptional customer service. The transition began in 2021 amidst the pandemic, which necessitated remote training and careful implementation. The management and staff, despite initial hesitations, recognized that moving to an electronic system was crucial for efficiency and ultimately were excited to make the change.
We wanted to get away from the paperwork shuffle on the front-end and back-end. We knew we were going to be doubling in size, and we did not want to double our paperwork or workload. The team was eager to change to a new solution.

The Results
The adoption of HST’s electronic charting has significantly transformed the day-to-day operations at Bend Surgery Center. Todd highlighted the major benefits as the reduction in paperwork, increased operational efficiency, and the ease of charting processes. The center is now able to manage its expanded workload more effectively without the previously overwhelming paper shuffle. While the full quantitative benefits are still being assessed, the qualitative improvements in workflow and staff satisfaction are evident.
Since implementing HST eChart, the most welcome changes have been the lack of redundant paperwork and the overall ease of operations.

The Future
Looking ahead, Bend Surgery Center is focused on further enhancing its operational efficiency and patient care through strategic technological integrations. Todd and his team are particularly interested in implementing HST’s scheduling & care communication, HST’s patient estimates, and HST’s case cost forecasting. These initiatives aim to improve patient texting and pre-assessments and streamline internal processes. With a strong partnership with HST, the center is well-positioned to leverage new technologies and insights to stay ahead in a competitive healthcare environment, ensuring continued growth and improved patient outcomes.
